Adrenal Fatigue: What You Should Know

3/13/2015

The following information was prepared for my first ever public speaking event as an RHN. I spoke to a members of a running clinic on nutrition for active living and the nuts and bolts of adrenal fatigue. I found this in my archives this morning and didn't totally cringe when I read it, so I figured it was worth a share here.
  • Although adrenal fatigue is a well-researched topic, its diagnosis is not common in standard Western medicine. While some general practitioners do diagnose this illness, large bodies, such as the Mayo Clinic, are yet to accept its existence as a medical condition.
  • Adrenal glands are responsible for regulating a variety of hormones, including those hormones responsible for dealing with stress: cortisol, epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline).
  • In adrenal fatigue, it is believed that the adrenal glands function less than optimally. This leads to a variety of symptoms including: tension, headaches, chronic nervousness, agitation, extreme fatigue, depression, difficult weight loss, anxiety, dizziness and more.
  • The syndrome is common in people who are chronically stressed. It is also common among athletes of both strength and endurance. It is associated with over-training.
  • Recovery includes: rest, rest and more rest. Further, removing stimulants such as tobacco, and caffeine from the diet are important. Eating a nutrient dense diet including plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables can be helpful.
  • There are a variety of nutrients that are beneficial in combating stress and stress related illnesses. Remember: food sources of nutrients are always best.
